Reddit SEO: why Reddit threads shape Google and AI answers
Reddit SEO is the practice of making a brand, product or expert useful and visible in Reddit discussions, because those threads rank in search engines and are read by AI engines when they answer questions about products and services.
Also called: Reddit marketing for SEO, Reddit for AI visibility
Why it matters for AI search
Google and OpenAI both have agreements with Reddit for access to its Data API, and AI answers to product questions often cite Reddit threads. When buyers ask an engine which tool or product to choose, honest discussion on Reddit is one of the sources it can draw on. That makes genuine participation valuable, and manipulation risky.
Why Reddit matters for search and AI
On February 22, 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit. Google gained access to Reddit's Data API for real-time, structured content, and said it would make Reddit content easier to find in its products, noting that people already search Google for Reddit discussions about products and travel. On May 16, 2024, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership giving OpenAI access to the same Data API so its products can better understand and show Reddit content, especially on recent topics.
The result is visible in answers. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews "which X should I buy" and Reddit threads are often among the sources. Those threads carry first-hand experience, which is what both engines and buyers look for.
What honest Reddit SEO looks like
- Read first. Find the subreddits and threads where your category is discussed. Note recurring questions and complaints. That is research for your own pages too.
- Answer as yourself. Use a real account, say who you are and where you work, and help with the question asked even when your product is not the answer.
- Follow each community's rules. Many subreddits restrict self-promotion or allow it only in set threads. Moderators decide, not you.
- Fix what threads complain about. If a thread says your onboarding is confusing, fixing it and replying with the change is worth more than ten posts.
- Let customers speak. Make it easy for happy customers to share experiences, without paying for or scripting them.
What not to do
Do not create fake accounts, buy aged accounts, buy upvotes, coordinate voting, post fake "I just found this tool" stories, or pay people to post without disclosure. Reddit's rules forbid spam and content manipulation, and ask users to participate authentically. The FTC requires clear disclosure of material connections, including when employees or owners post. Beyond the rules, these tactics get found out, and the thread exposing them can become the most-cited page about your brand. GetPicked never posts on Reddit as a customer, buys votes or runs fake accounts.

Questions
- Why do Reddit threads show up so often in Google and AI answers?
- People search for first-hand opinions on products, travel and services, and Reddit has lots of them. Google said in 2024 that it would show more Reddit content in its products, and both Google and OpenAI announced access to Reddit's Data API.
- Can I post about my own product on Reddit?
- Yes, within each subreddit's rules and with clear disclosure that it is your product. The FTC says employees and owners must disclose the connection in the post itself; a profile line is not enough. Many subreddits limit or ban self-promotion.
- Does buying upvotes or old Reddit accounts work?
- Do not do it. Reddit's rules prohibit spam and content manipulation, accounts get banned, moderators remove the posts, and undisclosed promotion can break FTC rules. Communities also call it out publicly, which becomes its own negative mention.
- How do I see which Reddit threads AI engines cite for my category?
- Ask the engines your buyers' questions several times and note cited reddit.com links. Search Google for your category plus reddit. Read those threads to learn what people ask and complain about.
