Brand mentions: linked and unlinked mentions in SEO and AI answers

A brand mention is any reference to a brand by name on a page, forum, review site, news article or AI-generated answer, whether or not it links to the brand's website.

Also called: unlinked brand mentions, brand citations, implied links

Why it matters for AI search

AI engines build their view of a brand from what the web says about it. When independent reviews, articles and threads name you in the context of a problem you solve, engines are more likely to name you in answers about that problem. Mentions in AI answers are also the main thing AI visibility measures.

Two kinds of brand mentions

Mentions on the web. Your name in a review, a comparison article, a Reddit thread, a podcast transcript or a news story. Some link to you, many do not.

Mentions in AI answers. Your name in the text ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Grok write when someone asks about your category. These are the output. Web mentions are much of the input.

Why independent mentions matter

Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines ask raters to look for reputation information and ask: what do outside, independent sources say? When a company's claims about itself conflict with reputable independent sources, raters are told to trust the independent sources. The guidelines also note that a company's own social media pages are not independent sources.

AI engines work from the same material. When an engine answers "best running shoes for flat feet", it searches, reads pages and threads that discuss the topic, and names the brands they name. A brand with a strong website but no independent mentions gives the engine little to work with.

Example

Two meal-kit companies have similar sites. One is named in a few dietitian blog posts, a long Reddit thread comparing kits, and a local news piece about its sourcing. The other has only its own pages. Ask an engine "meal kit for someone with celiac disease" and the first is far more likely to appear, often citing the thread or the blog posts rather than its own site.

How to earn mentions honestly

  • Make the facts that people repeat easy to find: price, who it is for, what makes it different.
  • Do work worth writing about, then tell journalists and creators about it; see digital PR.
  • Take part in communities as yourself, with disclosure; see Reddit SEO.
  • Ask real customers for reviews on the sites buyers read.

Do not buy undisclosed posts, run fake accounts or seed reviews. The FTC requires clear disclosure of material connections, including employees posting about their employer, and these tactics break platform rules. GetPicked never posts as a customer or buys mentions.

Measuring mentions in AI answers

Mentions in AI answers vary between runs, so count them as a rate across many prompts and runs, per engine. That is the core of AI brand monitoring, and the difference between a mention and a linked source is covered under AI citations.

Questions

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
Google has not published a ranking factor called brand mentions. Its rater guidelines do tell raters to judge reputation by what independent sources say. For AI answers the effect is more direct: engines read those pages and repeat what they say.
What is the difference between a brand mention and a backlink?
A backlink is a hyperlink to your site. A mention is your name in text, with or without a link. Links pass people and crawlers to your site. Mentions shape what readers and AI engines associate with your brand.
How do I find brand mentions?
Search your brand name in quotes on Google, Reddit and review sites, set up alerts, and ask AI engines about your brand and category. For AI answers, track mentions across several runs per prompt since they vary.
Can I pay for brand mentions?
Paid placements must be disclosed. The FTC requires clear disclosure of material connections, and Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking as spam unless they carry rel sponsored or nofollow. Undisclosed paid mentions also risk the trust they are meant to build.
