ChatGPT SEO: how to get cited and recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT can only cite pages its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is allowed to read: OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Beyond that gate, ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers and its own crawl, then cites the pages that answer the question best. Allow OAI-SearchBot, make sure your key pages answer buyer questions plainly, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites in your category.
- Crawlers
- OAI-SearchBot (ai search): decides whether your pages can be shown and cited in ChatGPT search answers
- ChatGPT-User (user-triggered fetch): fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT about it or a GPT action calls it
- GPTBot (model training): collects pages that may train future OpenAI models; it does not affect search
- Where results come from
- ChatGPT search partners with third-party search providers, rewriting the question into targeted queries, and combines their results with OpenAI's own OAI-SearchBot crawl.
- How sources show up
- Answers carry inline citations; a Sources button, when available, lists the cited pages and other relevant links.
- Shopping
- Product results come from structured product data. Merchants can submit a product feed (CSV or JSON) through OpenAI's agentic commerce program; complete, recommended attributes improve ranking.
- Your controls
- OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt: Disallow it and your content is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though the site can still appear as a navigational link. Changes take about 24 hours.
- GPTBot in robots.txt: Opts out of model training only. Independent of the OAI-SearchBot setting.
- ChatGPT-User in robots.txt: Covers user-initiated fetches; OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to them.

How GetPicked measures ChatGPT
Our Pick Check asks ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask through the OpenAI Responses API with the web_search tool, via Vercel AI Gateway (model openai/gpt-5.4-nano), several times per question, and counts how often the answer names or cites your site. Each rate comes with a likely range, because answers vary from run to run. How we measure.
Run a free auditHow ChatGPT picks the sites it cites
When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches the web. OpenAI describes the mechanics in its help center: ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, sends them to search partners, reviews what comes back, and may run more specific follow-up queries before it answers. The answer then cites the pages it relied on, with a Sources button listing them.
Two gates decide whether your pages can be part of that:
- OAI-SearchBot must be allowed. OpenAI is explicit that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. A
Disallowfor it, a blanketUser-agent: *block, or a CDN "block AI bots" setting that catches it all take you out. - Your pages must be findable through search. Because ChatGPT leans on search partners, a page that no search engine indexes is hard for ChatGPT to discover, even if OAI-SearchBot could read it.
Past the gates, ChatGPT chooses the pages that answer the specific question. That is why a clear "pricing" page or a "Linear vs Jira" comparison gets cited while a slogan-heavy homepage doesn't.
What to fix first, in order
- Access. Run the live check above. OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User should be allowed on the pages you want cited, and your firewall should not challenge them. Training (GPTBot) is a separate choice: block it if you like, it doesn't affect search.
- Indexing. Make sure your key pages are in the major search indexes. Our robots.txt checker catches crawler blocks; Index Coverage in Pick Monitor checks Google, Bing and Brave page by page.
- Pages that answer buyer questions. Buyers ask ChatGPT things like "best invoicing tool for freelancers in the EU". Have a page that answers that kind of question in its first paragraph, with facts an answer can quote: who it's for, price, what makes it different, and honest comparisons.
- Mentions where ChatGPT already looks. Every ChatGPT answer cites someone. If it cites review sites, comparison articles or community threads in your category and none mention you, that is the gap to close. The free Pick Check lists the sources each engine cited instead of you.
Shopping in ChatGPT
For product questions ChatGPT shows product results built from structured product data. OpenAI's agentic commerce program lets merchants submit a product feed (CSV or JSON, refreshed regularly), and OpenAI's documentation says complete, recommended attributes improve ranking and relevance. On your own pages, product schema with price and availability, plain product descriptions and real review content help both ChatGPT and every other engine. See ChatGPT shopping optimization for the store-specific steps.
What not to do
- Don't block GPTBot expecting to fix search, or allow it expecting to rank. It is training only.
- Don't write for "ChatGPT SEO" tricks. Hidden prompts, keyword lists and invisible text don't survive a model reading the page; a plain answer does.
- Don't measure with one manual chat. Answers vary from run to run and by phrasing. Ask the same questions several times and track the rate.
Measuring progress
Track two numbers: how often ChatGPT names you for the questions your buyers ask, and which sources it cites instead. The Pick Check does this with repeated runs and a likely range for each rate, so a change from 2 in 9 to 5 in 9 means something, and a single lucky answer doesn't.
Questions
- How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?
- First, allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt: OpenAI says sites that opt out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then make sure your key pages state plainly what you do, for whom and at what price, and that other sites ChatGPT cites in your category mention you.
- Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?
- No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. Search inclusion is controlled by OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can block training and stay in search.
- How long does a robots.txt change take to affect ChatGPT search?
- OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust.
- Is ChatGPT search just Bing?
- OpenAI says ChatGPT search partners with third-party search providers and sends them rewritten queries, alongside its own OAI-SearchBot crawl. It doesn't publish the full list for consumer ChatGPT, so being indexed by the major search engines and crawlable by OAI-SearchBot are both worth checking.
- I meant using ChatGPT to do SEO. Is this the right page?
- This page is about getting your site cited by ChatGPT. For using ChatGPT as a writing or research assistant for SEO, any general guide to prompting will serve you better; the steps below are what decides whether ChatGPT can recommend you at all.
