Google AI Overviews SEO: how to get into AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features, so they draw on the Google Search index: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and Google says no extra markup, files or special optimization are needed. Googlebot is the crawler that matters; Google-Extended has no effect on these features. Get your key pages indexed, make them answer buyer questions plainly, and check snippet controls and the Search Console generative AI setting aren't keeping you out.

Crawlers
  • Googlebot (ai search): crawls for Google Search, which AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on; its robots.txt rules cover these features
  • Google-Extended (model training): controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps; it does not affect AI Overviews or AI Mode
Where results come from
Both features use the Google Search index. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no additional requirements. They may run several related searches (query fan-out) and may use different models, so the links they show can differ.
How sources show up
AI Overviews show a summary with links to sites for further reading; AI Mode gives a longer answer with links to supporting sites. When AI Mode isn't confident in an AI response, it shows web links instead.
Shopping
Google says Merchant Center feeds and Business Profiles can help products and local businesses appear in AI responses. Merchant Center's AI performance insights report shows share of voice in AI Mode and AI Overviews for organic traffic such as free listings.
Your controls
  • Googlebot in robots.txt: Governs crawling for all of Google Search, including AI features. Blocking it keeps you out of AI Overviews and AI Mode along with the rest of Search.
  • nosnippet: Removes snippets in every form of search result and stops the content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • max-snippet: Limits snippet length and also limits how much content may be used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • data-nosnippet: An HTML attribute that keeps marked parts of a page out of snippets; Google lists it among the controls for what AI features show.
  • Search Console: Search generative AI: Include (the default), Exclude or Inherit from parent. Exclude removes your links and content from Search generative AI features within a few days, with no effect on the rest of Search.
  • Google-Extended in robots.txt: Covers Gemini training and Gemini Apps grounding only. It does not affect Search, AI Overviews or AI Mode.

How GetPicked measures Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode has no API that returns its answers, so our Pick Check does not measure it directly. It measures Gemini with Grounding with Google Search, which draws on the same Google index, alongside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Grok.

Both features sit inside Google Search and draw on the Google Search index. Google's own documentation states the bar: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and there are no additional requirements. There is no separate AI crawler, no special file and no AI-only markup.

What changes is how many searches run behind one question. Google says both features may use query fan-out: they run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then write a response. That can surface a wider, more varied set of links than a classic results page, which is good news for a specific page that answers one part of the question well. The two features may use different models, so the links in an AI Overview and an AI Mode answer to the same question can differ.

AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems judge them useful on top of classic results. AI Mode always answers, but when it isn't confident in an AI response it shows a set of web links instead.

What to fix first, in order

  1. Access. Googlebot must be allowed in robots.txt and must not be blocked or challenged by your CDN or host. Run the live check above, or use the robots.txt checker. See the Googlebot page for details.
  2. Indexing. Verify your site in Search Console and use URL Inspection on the pages you want cited. A page that isn't indexed, or carries noindex, can't appear in either feature.
  3. Pages that answer buyer questions. Google's advice is ordinary SEO done well: unique, non-commodity content written for people, important content in text rather than locked in images, a good page experience, internal links, and structured data that matches what the page shows. A page that states who the product is for, what it costs and how it compares gives fan-out searches something to land on.
  4. Mentions on cited sites. The links in AI Overviews come from the same index as everything else, so earn genuine coverage on the review sites and guides that already appear for your category's questions. Google's guide warns against seeking inauthentic mentions.

Snippet controls and the opt-out, and their trade-offs

These features reuse Google's snippet rules, so the same settings decide how much of your page they can use:

  • nosnippet turns off snippets in every kind of result and also stops the content being a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • max-snippet caps snippet length and also caps how much content those features may use directly.
  • data-nosnippet marks parts of a page to keep out of snippets. Use it on boilerplate or sensitive text, not on the paragraph you want quoted.
  • Search Console, Settings, Search generative AI offers Include (the default), Exclude or Inherit from parent. Exclude removes your links and content from Search generative AI features within a few days. It doesn't change the rest of Search, doesn't affect training, and doesn't override Merchant Center or Ads choices.

Every one of these trades AI visibility for control. Restrictive settings mean fewer or smaller appearances, and changes to page-level controls only apply once Google recrawls the page, which can take days to months. Google-Extended is not one of these levers: it governs Gemini, not Search. See the Gemini guide for that.

Shopping in AI Overviews and AI Mode

For products, Google tells merchants to keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information current, and says feeds and profiles can help products and local businesses appear in AI responses. Free listings are on by default for new Merchant Center accounts. Merchant Center's AI performance insights report (Analytics, Products, AI performance) shows your share of voice in AI Mode and AI Overviews for organic traffic such as free listings, with ads excluded. It covers English queries for accounts in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US, and Google says well-described product data is more likely to be shown. For store-specific steps, read Google AI Mode for Shopify stores.

What not to do

  • Don't block Google-Extended to stay out of AI Overviews. It has no effect there; it only removes you from Gemini.
  • Don't add llms.txt, AI text files or chunked rewrites expecting a boost. Google says Search doesn't use them. Keeping an llms.txt for other engines is fine.
  • Don't set nosnippet site-wide by accident. It removes you from these features and from ordinary snippets at once.
  • Don't mark up content that isn't on the page. Structured data should match visible text.

Measuring progress

GetPicked doesn't measure AI Overviews or AI Mode directly; the Pick Check panel measures Gemini through the Gemini API with Grounding with Google Search, which is a related but separate system. For Google's AI features, use Search Console. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date; it reports impressions, not clicks, and sites with too few impressions may not see it. Merchants can add Merchant Center's AI performance insights for product share of voice.

Questions

How do I get my site into Google AI Overviews?
Google says there are no additional requirements: the page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Allow Googlebot, fix indexing problems, write pages that answer your buyers' questions in plain text, and make sure your Search Console generative AI setting is Include.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search, and AI Overviews and AI Mode are Search features. It controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google's generative AI optimization guide says llms.txt, AI text files, special markup and chunking are not needed and that Google Search does not use them. Keeping an llms.txt file does no harm; it just won't help here.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?
Yes. Set Search Console's Search generative AI setting to Exclude. Google says it removes your links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover generative AI features within a few days, is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and does not affect training. You also lose the traffic those features send.
Where do I see traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Clicks are counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. The Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date.
