Digital PR: earning online coverage that AI engines read and cite

Digital PR is public relations done online: earning coverage, mentions and links from news sites, trade publications, blogs, newsletters, podcasts and creators by giving them something worth reporting, rather than paying for the placement.

Also called: digital public relations, online PR

Why it matters for AI search

AI engines answer category questions by reading what independent sources say. A product covered by trade press, roundups and respected newsletters gives engines third-party pages to cite and repeat. Digital PR is one of the few ways to add those sources, and AI answers tend to reward coverage that states clearly who a product is for.

What digital PR is

Public relations is the practice of managing and spreading information about an organization. Wikipedia separates earned media (coverage you do not pay for) from paid media (advertising and sponsored placements). Digital PR is the earned side, done online: a journalist quotes your founder, a trade site reviews your product, a newsletter includes you in a roundup, a podcast invites you on.

Common activities:

  • publishing original data or research that writers want to cite;
  • offering expert comment on news in your field;
  • product launches pitched to the writers who cover the category;
  • getting included in "best of" and comparison articles by asking editors to review you;
  • creator and podcast appearances.

Why it matters for AI answers

Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines tell raters to judge a site by what "outside, independent sources" say about it, and to trust those sources over a company's claims about itself. AI engines work from the same web. When someone asks "best payroll software for restaurants", the engine reads roundups, reviews and threads, and names the brands those sources name. Digital PR is how a brand gets into those sources. It also gives the engine accurate third-party wording for what you do, which reduces the chance of wrong descriptions.

Example

Say a small analytics startup publishes an anonymized study of checkout abandonment across its customers, with the method explained. Two ecommerce trade sites and a newsletter cover it, each describing the startup in one line. Months later, an AI answer about reducing checkout abandonment cites one of those articles and names the startup.

To check whether digital PR is working for AI visibility, ask the engines your buyer questions before and after a campaign, several runs each, and look at two things: whether your mention rate moved, and whether the new coverage appears among the cited sources. Links and referral visits are useful too, but they miss the answers where you are named without a click.

Lines not to cross

Disclose paid relationships. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking as link spam unless they use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", and the FTC requires clear disclosure of material connections. Do not invent data, write fake reviews, post under fake names, or place undisclosed paid articles. GetPicked never buys mentions or posts as a customer. Questions

What is the difference between digital PR and link building?
Link building aims at links. Digital PR aims at coverage: a story, a quote, a review, a mention in a roundup. Links often follow, but a strong unlinked mention in a trusted publication still counts for reputation and for AI answers.
Is paying for a sponsored article digital PR?
That is paid media, not earned coverage. It is allowed if disclosed. Google's spam policies say paid links must carry rel sponsored or nofollow, and the FTC requires clear disclosure of paid relationships.
What kind of digital PR helps with AI visibility?
Coverage that explains what you do and who it is for, on sites engines read for your category: trade press, comparison roundups, expert newsletters and respected blogs. A vague mention in a press release syndication network adds little.
Can a small company do digital PR without an agency?
Yes. Start with a short list of writers who cover your niche, offer them original data, an expert comment or a useful story, and reply quickly to journalist requests in your field.
