Zero-click search: why fewer searches end in a visit
A zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page without the user clicking through to any website, because the answer was shown directly in a snippet, panel, AI summary or other search feature.
Also called: zero-click result, zero click searches, no-click search
Why it matters for AI search
AI Overviews and AI Mode answer more questions on the results page, so more searches end without a visit. When the click disappears, the mention inside the answer becomes the visibility. A brand that is named or cited in the AI summary still reaches the buyer; one that only ranks below it may not.
What causes zero-click searches
Search engines have shown more on the results page for years. Rich snippets drew on structured data from 2009. Knowledge panels, built on Google's Knowledge Graph, arrived in 2012. Featured snippets, calculators, weather, sports scores and maps added more answers that need no visit. Google announced its Search Generative Experience in 2023 and launched AI Overviews in 2024, followed by AI Mode in 2025.
Each feature resolves some searches on the page. "How tall is the Eiffel Tower" never needs a click. "Best accounting software for a three-person firm" usually still does, though the AI summary now shapes which sites get that click.
What the data shows
The best-known measurement is SparkToro's 2024 study by Rand Fishkin, built on clickstream data from Datos:
| Market | Searches ending with no click | Clicks to the open web per 1,000 searches |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 58.5% | 360 |
| European Union | 59.7% | 374 |
"Open web" here means sites that are not Google-owned and not paying for Google ads. The figures predate the broad rollout of AI Overviews, and SparkToro flags that they may be out of date.
The study split the zero-click searches into two kinds: about 37 percent of all searches ended the session outright, and about 22 percent were followed by a new, changed query. In other words, a large share of searches are settled by whatever the results page shows, which is why the content of that page now matters as much as the ranking beneath it.
What to do about it
- Treat the answer as the impression. If a knowledge panel or featured snippet shows your facts, make sure they are right.
- Earn the mention inside AI summaries. Check what Google AI Overviews say for your core questions and whether you are cited.
- Measure value, not only visits. Google itself suggests looking at sales, signups and engagement rather than clicks alone.
- Track the clicks that remain. Visits from AI answers show up as AI referral traffic and tend to come from people further along in their decision.

Questions
- What percentage of Google searches are zero-click?
- SparkToro's 2024 study, using Datos clickstream data, found that 58.5 percent of US Google searches and 59.7 percent of EU searches ended without a click on any result. The study notes its data may now be out of date.
- Do AI Overviews increase zero-click searches?
- They answer more of the question on the results page, which reduces the need to click for simple lookups. Google's position is that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with visitors spending more time on the site.
- Are zero-click searches bad for my business?
- Not always. If the snippet, panel or AI answer names your brand correctly, the searcher still learns about you. The risk is when the answer names a competitor or gets your facts wrong.
- How do I measure visibility when there is no click?
- Look beyond sessions: Search Console impressions, brand searches, conversions, and how often AI answers mention or cite you for the questions your buyers ask.
