AI visibility: how often AI engines name and recommend your brand

AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants and AI search engines mention, cite or recommend a brand, product or site when people ask them questions the brand should be an answer to.

Also called: LLM visibility, AI search visibility, visibility in AI

Why it matters for AI search

AI visibility is the outcome every other AI search practice aims at. It has three parts: whether engines can reach and read your pages, whether they name you in answers, and whether they recommend you over alternatives. Because answers vary between runs, it is a rate measured across many prompts and runs, per engine, not a fixed position.

What AI visibility includes

AI visibility is a short name for several layers that depend on each other:

  1. Access. Can the engine's crawlers fetch your pages? OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in its results. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  2. Mentions. Does the answer text name you? See brand mentions.
  3. Citations. Does the answer link your page as a source? See AI citations.
  4. Recommendation. When someone asks "which should I choose", are you the pick, on the shortlist, or missing?
  5. Accuracy. When you are named, is what the engine says about you correct?

A site can be strong on one layer and weak on another. A well-known brand may be mentioned often but cited rarely because its own pages are hard to read. A small brand can be cited for a niche question and still never be recommended.

How to measure it

AI answers change between runs, so AI visibility is a rate, not a rank. A fair measurement asks a fixed set of buyer prompts several times on each engine and reports the share of answers that mention or recommend you, with a likely range, per engine. Blending engines into one score hides the differences that matter. GetPicked reports pick rates this way; the methodology page explains the sampling. Related metrics are AI share of voice (you against competitors) and AI rank tracking (the same prompts over time).

Analytics tools see only part of it. GA4's AI Assistant channel shows clicks from tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, and Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks inside Organic Search. Neither shows answers that named you without a click.

How to improve it

  • Allow the search crawlers of the engines you care about, and check with the robots.txt checker.
  • Put the facts buyers ask about on crawlable pages: price, fit, comparisons, limits.
  • Earn mentions in the independent sources engines read, such as reviews, forums and press.
  • Check what each engine says about you, starting with the AI visibility checker, and fix wrong facts at the source.

Questions

Is AI visibility the same as LLM visibility?
In practice, yes. LLM visibility stresses the language model, AI visibility stresses the products people use (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews). Both mean how often those systems surface your brand.
How do I check my AI visibility?
Ask each engine the questions your buyers ask, several times each, and record whether you are named, cited and recommended. GetPicked's Pick Check, free with an account, does this for a set of prompts across several engines.
Can I see AI visibility in Google Analytics?
Only the clicks. GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. It cannot show answers where you were named but nobody clicked.
Why does my AI visibility change from day to day?
AI answers are generated fresh for each request and engines run different searches, so results shift between runs. Measure with enough prompts and repeats that a change in the rate means something, and compare ranges, not single results.
