Google knowledge panel: how it appears and how to claim it

A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows in search results for people, organisations, places and things, generated automatically from its Knowledge Graph and sources across the web to give a quick snapshot of the entity.

Also called: Google knowledge panel, knowledge box, knowledge card

Why it matters for AI search

A knowledge panel is a visible sign that Google recognises your brand or name as a distinct entity with known facts. The same entity understanding helps AI engines identify you correctly. A wrong panel is also a warning: the facts AI tools repeat about you may be wrong in the same way.

What a knowledge panel shows

Knowledge panels appear on Google, usually beside desktop results or near the top on mobile, when a search refers to a recognised entity. A panel for a company might show its logo, a short description, founding date, founders, headquarters and social profiles. A panel for a person might show their job, works and related people.

Google says the information comes from various sources across the web, sometimes with licensed data partners for topics such as films or music. Panels are generated automatically and update as information changes. Google also considers direct input from the entities themselves and general user feedback.

How to claim and edit yours

Google's verification steps:

  1. Sign in to a Google Account.
  2. Search Google for yourself or the entity you represent and find the panel.
  3. Click Claim this knowledge panel at the bottom of the panel.
  4. Review the information, then sign in to one of the official sites or profiles Google lists (such as YouTube, Search Console, X or Facebook). If Google cannot connect you to a profile, it will ask for more information.

Once verified, you can suggest edits through Feedback and add other managers. Not every panel is claimable yet. A local business that serves customers in person should use a Google Business Profile instead.

How to influence what appears

  • Organization markup. Google says its Organization structured data can influence which logo appears and what shows in the knowledge panel. Add a logo of at least 112 by 112 pixels and sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • Consistent facts everywhere. The same name, description and dates on your site, social profiles and directories.
  • Open data. If you qualify, a referenced Wikidata item is one of the public sources many knowledge bases reuse.

Changes are not instant. Google reviews suggested edits, and a panel can take weeks to reflect a fix made on your site or in a public database. Keep a record of what you changed and where, so you can check later whether the panel caught up.

Knowledge panels and AI answers

A knowledge panel is a zero-click answer: many searchers read it and move on. It also shows how Google's knowledge graph sees you. Compare it with what Google AI Overviews and other engines say about your brand; if the facts disagree, fix the sources. That consistency work is entity SEO.

Questions

How do I get a Google knowledge panel?
You cannot apply for one. Google says knowledge panels are generated automatically from information across the web. You can raise the odds by making your entity clear and consistent: Organization structured data with a logo and sameAs links, consistent profiles, and coverage on sources Google trusts.
How do I claim my knowledge panel?
Sign in to a Google Account, search for yourself or the entity you represent, click Claim this knowledge panel at the bottom of the panel, and sign in to one of the official profiles Google lists, such as YouTube or Search Console. Google notes that not all knowledge panels can be claimed yet.
How do I change wrong information in a knowledge panel?
Anyone can use the Feedback link on the panel to suggest a change. If you have claimed the panel, your suggestions get priority. Include links to sources that support the correction, and fix the same fact on the sources Google reads.
Is a knowledge panel the same as a Google Business Profile?
No. They look similar, but a Business Profile is for businesses that serve customers at a location or within a service area, and you create and manage it yourself. Knowledge panels cover entities such as people, organisations, works and topics, and are generated automatically.
