WooCommerce SEO for AI search: robots.txt, sitemaps and product schema
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so robots.txt and the XML sitemap come from WordPress core or your SEO plugin, not from WooCommerce. What WooCommerce adds is Product structured data: JSON-LD on every single product page, which you can extend with a filter. There is no llms.txt or AI crawler setting in WooCommerce itself.
- Edit robots.txt
- With a plugin or appWordPress serves a virtual robots.txt and WooCommerce adds no editor. Edit it with an SEO plugin's file editor or upload a physical file to the site root.
- XML sitemap
- YesWordPress core (5.5 and later) serves a sitemap index covering public post types and taxonomies. SEO plugins such as Yoast and Rank Math replace it with /sitemap_index.xml.
/wp-sitemap.xml - llms.txt
- With a plugin or appNot in WooCommerce core. Yoast SEO and Rank Math can generate one, or you can upload a plain-text file to the site root.
- AI crawlers
- No AI-specific setting documented in WooCommerce. Control AI bots with robots.txt rules (Yoast SEO Premium has toggles for GPTBot, CCBot and Google-Extended) or at your host or CDN.
- Structured data
- Outputs JSON-LD on single product pages: Product with name, image, description, SKU, offers (price, currency, availability, seller), ratings and reviews, plus BreadcrumbList and a WebSite search action. Extend it with the woocommerce_structured_data_product filter.
robots.txt on a WooCommerce store
WooCommerce does not create or edit robots.txt. WordPress does: when there is no physical file in the site root, do_robots() generates a virtual one with User-agent: *, a Disallow for /wp-admin/ and an Allow for admin-ajax.php. WordPress 5.5 and later also add a Sitemap: line pointing to its sitemap index.
You have three ways to change it:
- An SEO plugin's editor. Yoast SEO has one under Tools > File editor, and Rank Math under General Settings > Edit robots.txt.
- A physical file. Upload
robots.txtto the WordPress root. It overrides the virtual file and any plugin editor that works on the virtual file. - Code. The
robots_txtfilter lets a theme or plugin change the generated output.
For a store, keep product, category and brand pages crawlable. If you want to stop model training but stay visible in AI answers, block training bots such as GPTBot and keep search bots like OAI-SearchBot allowed. The full WordPress picture is on the WordPress page.
WooCommerce sitemap
WordPress core serves /wp-sitemap.xml, an index of sitemaps for public post types, taxonomies, author archives and the homepage, with up to 2,000 URLs per sitemap by default. Plugins can disable or replace it, and most SEO plugins do: with Yoast SEO or Rank Math active, submit /sitemap_index.xml instead. Open the URL in a browser before submitting it to Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.
Product structured data WooCommerce outputs
This is where WooCommerce does its own work. On single product pages it prints JSON-LD that includes:
- A
Productwithname, image, description, skuand an@id offerswith price, currency, availability, URL and asellerOrganization (anAggregateOfferfor variable products)aggregateRatingandreviewitems when reviews exist- A
BreadcrumbListand aWebSitenode with a product search action
Archive pages no longer get product markup, following Google's rule to mark up only visible data. To add fields such as GTIN or brand, use the woocommerce_structured_data_product filter, which receives every value before output. If an SEO plugin also outputs product schema, check for duplicate Product entities in Google's Rich Results Test.
llms.txt and AI shopping agents
WooCommerce core has no llms.txt feature. WooCommerce's own guide suggests uploading the file to the root next to robots.txt with FTP or a file manager, and both Yoast SEO and Rank Math can generate one for you.
On agentic shopping, WooCommerce's October 2025 roadmap said WooCommerce 10.3 would ship a first MCP server for product and order management, that work on Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol had begun, and that it was experimenting with OpenAI's Product Feed Spec. None of that replaces the basics: crawlable product pages with complete descriptions and accurate structured data are still what AI engines read.

Questions
- Does WooCommerce add product schema without a plugin?
- Yes. WooCommerce outputs Product JSON-LD on single product pages by default, including offers, SKU and review data. View a product page's source and search for application/ld+json to see it.
- Where is the WooCommerce sitemap?
- WooCommerce has no sitemap of its own. WordPress core serves /wp-sitemap.xml, and if you use Yoast SEO or Rank Math, their index at /sitemap_index.xml takes over. Submit whichever one your site actually serves.
- How do I edit robots.txt on a WooCommerce store?
- Use the robots.txt editor in an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO (Tools > File editor) or Rank Math (General Settings > Edit robots.txt), or upload a physical robots.txt to the WordPress root over SFTP. A physical file replaces the virtual one WordPress generates.
- Can AI assistants buy from a WooCommerce store?
- WooCommerce said in October 2025 that it had started work on Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol and was experimenting with OpenAI's Product Feed Spec. Treat those as in progress and check WooCommerce's announcements before planning around them.
