What is AEO? Answer engine optimization for AI assistants

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine, such as a featured snippet, a voice assistant or an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Copilot, can take it as the direct answer to a question.

Also called: AEO, answer engine SEO

Why it matters for AI search

AI assistants answer in sentences, not links, so the page that gets credit is the one whose wording the assistant can reuse with confidence. AEO focuses on that unit: a clear question, a direct answer near it, and facts the assistant can check. Pages written this way are easier to quote, which is what puts a brand inside the answer.

Where AEO came from

The phrase "answer engine" predates chatbots. Featured snippets, which Google describes as results where the descriptive snippet comes first and the link second, and voice assistants that read one answer aloud both rewarded pages that stated an answer plainly near the question. AEO was the name for writing with that in mind.

AI assistants widened the target. Today the answer engine might be a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Alexa. Terminology varies by company. HubSpot and Sitecore use AEO broadly; Microsoft Advertising separates AEO (for assistants and agents) from GEO (for generative search results); Google says optimizing for its AI search is still SEO.

How answer engines pick an answer

An answer engine needs three things from a page:

  1. A matching question. The page, or a heading on it, mirrors how people ask: "How long does X take?", "Is X safe for Y?"
  2. A direct answer close by. One or two sentences that work out of context, followed by the detail.
  3. Something to trust. A named author, a date, a source for numbers, and consistency with what other sites say.

Google notes you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; its systems decide. The same is true of every AI assistant. AEO improves the odds, nothing more.

An AEO checklist

  • Collect the real questions: support tickets, sales calls, People Also Ask boxes and follow-up questions in AI chats.
  • Use them as headings and answer each in the first sentence below it.
  • Keep answers specific: prices, steps, compatibility, who it is for. Vague copy is not quotable.
  • Make sure crawlers can read the text. Content hidden behind scripts or logins never becomes an answer.
  • Check the answers the engines give today, for example on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and compare them with what your page says.

AEO next to GEO, AI SEO and LLM SEO

AEO is about the format of the answer. Generative engine optimization is about the share of a multi-source answer you earn. AI SEO is the umbrella marketing term, and LLM SEO covers how models learn about you. The classic AEO target, the featured snippet, is still a good proving ground.

Questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO is older and centred on the answer itself: snippets, voice answers and now assistant replies. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper and measures how much of a generated, multi-source answer draws on your page. Some vendors treat them as one practice; Microsoft Advertising uses AEO for assistants and agents such as Copilot and GEO for generative search.
What is an answer engine?
Any system that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links: Google featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants, and chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
Does Google support AEO as a separate discipline?
Google's position is that the fundamentals carry over: unique, helpful content, pages it can crawl and index, and structured data that matches visible text. Its May 2025 guidance for AI experiences lists those same basics rather than any special AEO technique.
Is FAQ markup required for AEO?
No. Clear questions and direct answers in the visible text matter more than markup. Google also says there is no special schema needed to appear in its AI features.
