What is agentic commerce? A practical guide for Shopify brands

Agentic commerce explained for Shopify merchants: how AI agents find, compare, and buy products, which protocols are involved, what Shopify now does for you, and what you still have to do.

Direct answer

Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI agent, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or Google AI Mode, does part of the work for the shopper: it searches catalogs, compares products, answers questions, and hands off to checkout. For a Shopify brand, it means your product data and reputation are read by software before a person ever sees your store.

Who this is for

  • Shopify founders who keep hearing about agentic commerce and want to know what changes for them.
  • Brands deciding whether to keep AI channels switched on in Shopify.
  • Teams planning what to fix first so agents pick their products.

Why it matters now

2026 turned agentic commerce from a demo into a default. Google and Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol in January, Shopify made eligible stores discoverable in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini by default in March, and OpenAI moved ChatGPT toward discovery with checkout on merchant sites and apps. The plumbing is now automatic for most Shopify stores; being chosen is not.

Worked example

Example: one product, three agent questions

A shopper asks an agent for a lightweight rain jacket under $150 for travel. The agent needs price, weight, packability, waterproof rating, sizes in stock, and reviews that mention travel. A product page that states those facts, with matching catalog data, can be shortlisted; one that says only 'our best jacket yet' cannot.

Catalog: price, sizes, availability, and category filled in Shopify.

Page: weight, waterproof rating, packed size, and a best-for line.

Evidence: review count and a travel-specific review the agent can quote.

What Shopify now does automatically

Since March 24, 2026, Shopify makes eligible stores' products discoverable in AI channels by default through Agentic Storefronts, with no extra transaction fees beyond standard processing. Merchants stay the merchant of record and can choose channels under Sales channels > Agentic.

Since May 11, 2026, the Agentic admin page shows performance across AI channels, which queries your products rank for, and recommendations to improve product data.

What you still have to do

Shopify connects the pipes and tells you what is missing; it does not rewrite your catalog, earn your reviews, or get your brand mentioned in the sources AI answers cite. Those three jobs decide which eligible product an agent recommends.

  • Apply the data recommendations across the whole catalog, not one product at a time.
  • Write the decision facts agents compare on: fit, materials, sizes, compatibility, use case.
  • Earn independent evidence: reviews, editorial roundups, and community answers posted honestly.

FAQ

Is agentic commerce the same as AI search?

They overlap. AI search answers a question and may cite your pages; agentic commerce goes further and acts on structured catalog data, comparing products and handing off to checkout. Shopify brands need both clear pages and clean product data.

Do I need to build anything to take part?

For most eligible Shopify stores, no integration is required: Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts handle syndication. The work that remains is data quality, product positioning, and earning the evidence agents rely on.

What are UCP and ACP?

They are protocols for agent shopping. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), from Google and Shopify, powers checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), from OpenAI and Stripe, defines how ChatGPT reads product feeds and hands off orders.
